Judging Criteria Guide

A guide to what our jurors look for prior to accepting  or excluding submissions

Creativity and Originality

  • Originality in art includes an artwork’s presentation and style, concrete criteria such as themes, techniques, and materials, as well as intangible criteria such as intentions and expressions. Art originality enables the artwork to be recognizable from the work of other artists, with the artist being the first author of the artwork

Technique, Skill and Presentation

  • Artistic skill and technique, overall level of competence, including skill of presentation on the artwork. Considerations might include the originality and the inimitable style of the work, consistency across the body of work and evidence of formal considerations such as line, shape, form, color, composition and design.

Overall Impression of the Art

  • 517 Gallery welcomes a variety of different art styles. At a minimum, a cohesive body of work is preferred for an artist. An example might be to explore one approach, concept, idea, topic, subject matter and theme.

Note: Beginner work is not automatically excluded, yet these criteria still apply

Some reasons you may be juried out

Poor Color or Image Quality

  • Sometimes we receive what may be an exceptional piece of art, but the image has colors that are not balanced, are washed out and are not representative of the original colors of the art.

Submitted Images are Crooked, Show Backgrounds, Watermarks or Large and Oversized Artist Signatures

  • Even though the artwork appears exceptional, they may not be considered suitable for exhibition and may be rejected.

Incomplete or Poorly Written Submission Materials.

  • If we receive submission forms that are incomplete, poorly written or needs to be updated or summarized, these submissions are likely to not be used as well*

*We try to get in touch with the artist to provide the opportunity to correct submission information before jurying the work out.
